One true story of a 16-year-old French boy from Rouen who was the youngest of his ill-fated group to man the first fort on the Atlantic Coast of what is now the United States. And another story of a man who arrived with the first (successful) settlers in Virginia, John Smith, a well known name for his Pocahontas connection (NOT romantic) but for him just the end of many incredible adventures.

THE FIRST FORT

Why were two ships with French Huguenots (Protestants) trying to sneak into America without the Spanish finding out? Because in France in 1562 they were much persecuted, and they hoped that with New World gold they could buy the King's favor and stop the persecution. They made it to the (present) South Carolina shore, hastily built a wooden fort, and while the others returned to France for supplies, 27 of them stayed in the fort. Kickin' Trail is the most luxurious "horse lodge" yet and the trip is going so well, for the horses as well as for Cole and Kate's social lives, until the corpse of one of the lodge guests is found on the trail and everyone seems to be a suspect. THE CURSE OF UBAR

But Sayed does not approve of their current venture, stealing the three golden keys said to belong to the gods of the magniicent city of Ubar. Tarquin Rafi does not want the keys. He wants the gold and ships secretly promised to him by each of the "royals" of Ubar --the Caliph, his brother, and his sister. Now Tarquin Rafi has the keys, but he finds, as Sayed warned him, that fighitng aerial sharks and winged centaurs is not as dangerous as dealing with the "royals" of Ubar.
