 'THE CROWN OF CASTILE"
How Isabel happened to become Queen
by Beverly Enwall
In mid-15th century in Spain, King Henry IV ruled Castile.  Well-meaning and trusting, Henry's rule and fondness for his male lovers and for things Moslem provoked reactions ranging from the  loyalty of the  common people to assassination attempts by the Barons.  The real wielder of power was the Marquis of Villena, referred to in chronicles as the "hand from hell in the velvet glove." This the story of how, through events and unlikely love affairs, Henry's half-forgotten  sister Isabel became Castile's most famous Queen.

"THE FIRST FORT"
by Beverly Enwall
In the year 1562, as France increased its persecution of non-Catholics, one group of Huguenots sailed for the New World to find gold to buy the King's favor.  They arrived on the southern coast of modern South Carolina and hastily erected a fort.   Among them was a 16-year-old boy, William Ruffin.  He was also among the 27 who were left to guard the fort and find gold. William was also the one sent often to the nearby Edisto Indian village where he made friends and learned the language. But it was an ill-fated fort that erupted in hatred and violence beyond anyone's ability to prevent.
