ITINERARY FOR TOUR D: FRANCE, SOUTH AFRICA, URUGUAY
FRANCE
1) The Coasts of Winds and War Arrival in Dieppe, the ivory museum, the excellent aquarium, the International Kite Festival, then a drive down the coast to the World War II memorials, then inland to a B&B on a dairy farm near Formigny.
2) Naturally in Normandy Sight-seeing in Normandy, the
Bayeux tapestry, a delicious lunch at the Lion d'Or before visiting Féronnerie d' Art La Forge to see blacksmith artistry. Another day, always enjoying rich Normandy cuisine, to Rabodanges to watch white-water kayaking slaloms, a French Olympic sport, an excursion to a deer farm in Eure, returning through Trévières to visit a master potter. Then the medieval festival and the re-enactment of the Battle of Formigny that ended the 100 Years War.
3) Bon jour, Burgundy! Across France by train to Dijon in Burgundy. Excursions to Arnay le Duc and its Regional House of Food and Tableware, to Is-sur-Tille where truffle dogs compete and an annual crossword puzzle festival is held, to Alise-Sainte-Reine where Vercingetorix defeated Julius Caesar, to the beautiful Château dAncy-le-Franc as well as Bazoches and Montjalin, a horseback ride through the great nature preserve, Morvan Park, and all the while, Burgundy cuisine.
4) Bouquets and Beaches From a former hunting lodge,
exploring Burgundy south, the museum dedicated to Nièpce, father of photography, the vineyards of Louis La Tour, making wine for nearly 300 years, and a 4-wheeler race in
Seurre before heading south to Cannes, the French Riviera, to the artists' favorite
town, Mougins, and to Grasse, perfume center of the world with a workshop in creating your own scent.
URUGUAY
1)Moon Over Montevideo Arriving in Montevideo, visiting
the Mercado del Puerto, listening to the candombe drummers who are usually
in the market, sight-seeing monuments and malls, and sailing, one of Uruguay's
favorite sports.
2) Uniquely Uruguayan Driving through the countryside to
Durazno on the River Yi, staying at an ecotour accommodation, boating and hiking
a ways upriver to see wildlife and hunt for agates and amethysts, enjoying an evening
in the town square with parilla and, of course, dancing the tango, the next day a visit
to a ñandu farm before continuing further north.
3) Gaucho Glamour Enjoying the thermal spa at Salto with many
pools, thermal waters and massages, a popular vacation among Uruguayans, then
inland and south to the town San Pedro de Timote near Florida, a 5-star estancia where guests can help the gauchos if they want, or just enjoy riding and good food, and appreciate a good show of the criollo horse.
4) Snipes Ahoy! Back to Montevideo and on to the resort
area, Punta de Este, to stay at the classic Hotel San Rafael and sight-see in the area, including the famous Casa Pueblo of Uruguay's premier artist, Carlos Paéz Vilaró. Then it
is time to watch the international snipe races, often held in Uruguay, by snipe
enthusiasts whose motto is "Serious sailing, serious fun."
SOUTH AFRICA
1) Earth, Sky and Water Arriving in "Jo-burg" (Johannesburg),
a visit to Gold Reef City to see an original mine shaft, see gold poured, and before enjoying all the amusements and rides, go through the sobering Apartheid Museum, then to Magaliesberg and a hot air balloon safari over Pilanesberg National Park, game stocking and land rehabilitation project ever done in Africa, then south on the train, stopping at the Kimberley diamond mine, then on all the way south to Capetown.
2)On the Baz Bus In Capetown, a flight to see both oceans at once, a boat ride out to infamous Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned, the
Two Oceans Aquarium, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, then the Baz Bus north
a short ways to Hermanus, one of the world's best places to watch whales from on shore
and find some excellent local art, then north to North to Stormsriver and the Tsitsikamma Lodge.
3) Kwa Zulu Natal Among the Stormsrivers adventures available, blackwater tubing and tree canopy walking. A drive through the Karoo to the Kango Caves, then to the Safari Ostrich Farm before taking a small plane flight to visit the
battlefields where Zulus and Europeans clashed, then on to Durban.
4) The Fabulous Five In Durban, rickshaw riding, shopping,
sight-seeing, enjoying the beach, an afternoon sail on the Indian Ocean.
An all-day excursion to a Zulu village, then to the Zululand Tree Lodge
in order to take the
dawn and evening safaris into the game reserves where rhinos are re-populating.
